Absorbed in her sorrows, Isaura did not see her father, who, entering the hall with soft and cautious steps, was making his way toward her.
The rescue enters on tiptoe, and Isaura, sunk in her grief, does not even see it. 'A passos subtis e cautelosos' — with soft, cautious steps — Miguel comes not as a saviour trumpeted but as a frightened old man slipping through a house where he must not be caught. The caution is the measure of their situation: even to reach his own daughter, a father must move like a thief. Guimarães answers the soaring prayer of the last passage with this earthbound quiet — no descending angel, just careful footsteps on a plantation floor. Heaven's mercy, if it is coming, arrives disguised as an old man afraid of being heard.
