A note on this passage

Isaura's 'sim' is instant — she does not weigh the plan, she seizes it — and then the two practical fears rush in: 'como? para onde?' How, and where. The questions are not doubts but the mind waking from despair into the logistics of hope; a moment ago she wanted a knife, now she wants a route. Guimarães lets the reader feel the pivot in her, the shift from a woman preparing to die to a woman calculating a chance. The brevity of the line — four little words after a chapter of speeches — carries the quickening of it. She is already, in her head, on the river.
