The narrator resumes the scene with a nod to his own structure: 'continuando o dialogo que deixámos apenas encetado' — picking up the dialogue left 'barely begun.' The chapter's long flashback and digression now yield to the confrontation itself, which had been suspended at Chapter VII's close. Leôncio speaks first, and his opening is a claim of total power.
