Having pressed his power, Leôncio dangles the false choice: 'de tua vontade unicamente depende a tua felicidade ou a tua perdição' — your happiness or your ruin hangs on your will alone. It is the seducer-tyrant's ultimatum dressed as her freedom: submit and prosper, resist and be destroyed. The word 'perdição,' ruin or damnation, carries the moral menace of the punishment-ladder that closed Chapter VIII. He offers Isaura the choice between her body and her life, and calls it her will.
