'Desvelou-se,' she gave herself sleepless care, to educate Isaura 'como… a uma filha querida' — as a beloved daughter. The phrase is nearly word-for-word the one Malvina used against Leôncio in Chapter VIII ('como a uma filha querida'). He appropriates his wife's own argument, the one that condemned him, and repurposes it: the daughterly love that should make Isaura untouchable becomes, in his mouth, the ground for claiming her.
