The passion escalates into melodrama and thinly veiled threat: 'um amor sem limites,' a love without limits, that will drive him 'á loucura ou ao suicidio,' to madness or suicide. It is emotional blackmail — his desire made Isaura's responsibility, his self-destruction her fault. And the trailing 'se não…,' if not…, breaks off before the alternative, which is not his suicide but her ruin. He lets the unfinished threat do its work.
