Isaura answers the threat not with fear for herself but with memory. Her mother Juliana — whose story Cap VII told in full — was worked and grieved to death on this same estate by this same family: 'seo pae fez morrer... a minha pobre mãe.' The line binds the two generations into a single indictment; the cruelty Leôncio promises is not hypothetical but hereditary, a thing his house has done before. By naming it, Isaura strips his threat of its power to surprise her. She already knows what these men are capable of, because she has buried the proof.
