He has understood her after all. 'Não terás mãos nem pés' — you shall have neither hands nor feet — is his answer to her veiled vow of suicide: he will shackle her precisely so she cannot escape into death. It is the grimmest possible confirmation that he grasped her meaning and means to deny her even that last exit. The shackles, when they come, are not merely punishment; they are custody against her own hands.
