Isaura marks with terrible precision the line she will and will not cross. She offers total submission of the body — the coarsest, heaviest toil, borne 'sem murmurar' — accepting every burden slavery can lay on her labour. It is a bargain that concedes almost everything; she asks only to keep the one thing left. The passage measures exactly what she counts as survivable and what she does not: work, however brutal, she will bear; dishonour she will not. Her whole defence has narrowed to this single reserved room of the self, and she is willing to be broken by labour to protect it.
