The Carmelite, accompanied by the savage, set out: he wandered through the forest and the field in all directions; he was seeking something. After two hours he caught sight of the thicket of thistles beside which the last scene we told took place; he examined it on all sides and smiled, satisfied. Climbing the tree, and sliding down the liana, he and the savage entered the clearing we already know; the sun had risen a little while before.
