Mercenary men who sell their liberty, conscience, and life for a wage have no true devotion except to one object, money; their lord, their chief, and their friend is whoever pays them most. Fr. Ângelo knew the human heart, and so, barely initiated into the band's rule, he had gauged the character of the adventurers.
