Um ano havia que esperava, e como ele dizia, estava cansado: resolvera dar enfim o golpe; e para isso, depois de haver esmagado os dois cúmplices com a sua ameaça, depois de os haver reduzido a autômatos obedecendo ao seu gesto, entendeu que seria conveniente ao mesmo tempo animar esses manequins com algum sentimento, que lhes desse o atrevimento, a audácia e a força necessária para se lançarem na voragem e não trepidarem diante de nenhum obstáculo.
For a year he had waited, and as he said, he was tired: he had resolved to strike the blow at last; and for that, after having crushed the two accomplices with his threat, after having reduced them to automatons obeying his gesture, he judged it fitting at the same time to animate those mannequins with some feeling that would give them the daring, the audacity and the strength needed to fling themselves into the whirlpool and not falter before any obstacle.
