O primeiro movimento de Cecília, vendo o índio fora de susto; fugira insensivelmente da janela. Mas o seu bom coração irritou-se contra esse receio, e disse-lhe que ela não tinha que temer do homem que lhe salvara a vida. Lembrou-se que era ser má e ingrata pagar a dedicação que o índio lhe mostrava deixando-lhe ver a repugnância que lhe inspirava. Venceu pois a timidez, e assentou de fazer um sacrifício ao reconhecimento e gratidão que devia ao selvagem. Chegou à janela; fez com a mão alva e graciosa um gesto dizendo a Peri que se aproximasse.
Cecília's first impulse, seeing the Indian safe from danger, was to slip away instinctively from the window. But her good heart chafed against that misgiving, and told her she had nothing to fear from the man who had saved her life. She remembered that it was being wicked and ungrateful to repay the devotion the Indian showed her by letting him see the repugnance he inspired in her. So she overcame her shyness, and resolved to make a sacrifice to the gratitude she owed the wild man. She came to the window; with her white and graceful hand she made a gesture telling Peri to draw near.
