Yet his devotion did not falter; he went with D. Antônio de Mariz on his expeditions, helped him with his experience, guided him to the places where there were gold-bearing grounds or precious stones. Coming back from these expeditions he would range the fields all day to seek out a scent, a flower, a bird, which he would hand to the nobleman, begging him to give it to Ceci, for he no longer dared draw near her, for fear of displeasing her.
