Os dois cúmplices, supersticiosos, como eram as pessoas de baixa classe naquele tempo, atribuíam o fato a uma causa sobrenatural, e viam nele um aviso do céu. Loredano porém não era homem que cedesse a semelhante fraqueza; tinha ouvido uma voz; e essa voz embora surda e cava devia ser de um homem.
The two accomplices, superstitious as were the low-born of that time, ascribed the thing to a supernatural cause and saw in it a warning from heaven. Loredano, however, was not a man to yield to such weakness; he had heard a voice, and that voice, though muffled and hollow, must be a man's.
