Álvaro had received from D. Antônio de Mariz all the principles of that old chivalric loyalty of the fifteenth century, which the old nobleman kept as the best legacy of his forebears; the young man shaped all his deeds, all his ideas, upon that type of Portuguese barons who had fought at Aljubarrota beside the Master of Avis, the knight-king.
