— Não te zanga, disse o índio com doçura; Peri te ama, porque tu fazes a senhora sorrir. A cana quando está à beira dágua, fica verde e alegre; quando o vento passa, as folhas dizem Ce-ci. Tu és o rio; Peri é o vento que passa docemente, para não abafar o murmúrio da corrente; é o vento que curva as folhas até tocarem na água.
Do not be angry, said the Indian gently; Peri loves you because you make the lady smile. The cane, when it stands by the water's edge, grows green and glad; when the wind passes, the leaves say Ce-ci. You are the river; Peri is the wind that passes softly, so as not to smother the murmur of the current; it is the wind that bends the leaves until they touch the water.
