Here Loredano finally lands the blow he has been circling: Álvaro obeyed so eagerly because his heart was in it — because someone waits for him. Wrapped in a maxim about duty, the insinuation is now unmistakable, and it points straight at the ‘sacred' subject Álvaro forbade.
