The cord of ticum

Read the full text in our reader

When the animal, almost asphyxiated by the strangling, now made but a feeble resistance, the savage — still gripping the fork — thrust his hand beneath his tunic and drew out a cord of ticum that he had wound many times around his waist.

The setting

When the animal, half-choked, made only feeble resistance, the savage — still gripping the fork — reached under his tunic and drew out a cord of ticum wound many times around his waist.

A note on this passage

Peri means to take the jaguar alive. The 'corda de ticum' — a fiber cord from a native palm — is the forest's own rope, and the shift from killing to binding recasts the whole feat as capture, not slaughter.
