Chapter V. Cecília and Isabel talk — teasing banter that circles a real sadness in Cecília she cannot explain.
Isabel reaches for the obvious explanation — homesickness for the city, boredom with the frontier. It is the wrong answer, and Cecília's reply will correct it beautifully: she is not weary of the wilderness at all. Alencar uses the misreading to let his heroine declare her love of the land.
