— Olha, respondeu Isabel; ali está a tua rola esperando que a chames, e o teu veadinho que te olha com os seus olhos doces; só falta o outro animal selvagem.

"Look," answered Isabel; "there is your turtledove waiting for you to call it, and your little deer that watches you with its gentle eyes; only the other wild animal is missing."

The setting

Chapter V. Isabel teases out the cause of Cecília's mood, and lands — half in jest — on Peri, the third of her 'tame' creatures.

A note on this passage

Isabel counts Cecília's tame creatures and slyly files Peri among them — the 'other wild animal.' The joke is affectionate and also the novel's central problem in miniature: to the household, the Indian who worships Cecília is a pet, one more gentle beast she has charmed.
