Chapter V. The banter turns to real worry — Peri has been gone two days — and Cecília, troubled, turns to her tame deer.
Isabel names 'saudade' — the untranslatable Portuguese ache for something loved and lost — and hangs it on Peri: homesickness for the wild he gave up to stay near Cecília. It is a shrewd guess and a wounding one, since it would mean he might simply leave.
