The setting

Chapter V. The talk darkens: Isabel, of mixed birth, turns Cecília's tenderness for the 'tame Indian' into a wound about how she herself is seen.

A note on this passage

Cecília's reassurance is kindly and, the reader senses, not quite true — the innocence that cannot see cruelty is a blindness as well as a virtue. She loves her cousin too much to admit that the disdain Isabel feels is real.
