The setting

Chapter V. Cecília offers her cousin true sisterhood — and Isabel, moved, lets slip that her heart is set on a 'him' she will not name.

A note on this passage

The unfinished thought opens the door on Isabel's own buried love — a 'him' she cannot name, the man (Álvaro) whose regard would make being Cecília's sister mean everything. Alencar plants the whole of Isabel's tragedy in a single dangling pronoun.
