At this moment there was heard a clatter of hooves near the house; Isabel cast her eyes over the banks of the river, and saw a band of riders who were entering the enclosure.
Chapter V. As evening closes, a clatter of hooves announces the return of the riders — Álvaro among them — and Cecília, at his name, blushes.
The outside world breaks into the garden idyll exactly as it broke into the dream — through sound first, then sight. Alencar swings the chapter outward, from the enclosed feminine space of the hammock to the returning men, and the plot resumes its motion.
