Chapter V (close). The two cousins count the days of the riders' absence — each betraying her own heart — and go in as the sun sets.
Cecília catches the slip at once — the counting gives Isabel away as surely as a confession. For a moment the watcher becomes the watched, and the chapter's careful symmetry turns: each cousin is about to betray her heart to the other.
