Evening was dying

A tarde ia morrendo.
The afternoon was dying.
Chapter VII opens, like Chapter V, on the fall of light — but now it swells into Alencar's great sunset overture, the Ave-Maria hour over the forest.
A single clause opens the chapter, as in Chapter V — but 'dying' pitches it higher: this sunset is a death and a prayer, the famous Ave-Maria scene about to unfold.
