The setting

— I vow to God, Martim Vaz, said a third, that it's pinings for some lass he was courting in São Sebastião.

A note on this passage

The men guess at lovesickness — São Sebastião is Rio de Janeiro's old name. Their teasing is close to the truth without knowing it: Loredano's obsession IS a woman, but Cecília, not some town girl. ('reqüestando' carries the pre-1990 trema; frozen as published.)
