Thirty-six at the long table

Read the full text in our reader

In one of the porch-sheds that ran along the back of the house, thirty-six adventurers surrounded a long table, in the middle of which, in wooden bowls, steamed pieces of game already broached in a way that did honor to the guests' appetite.

The setting

In one of the porch-sheds that ran along the back of the house, thirty-six adventurers surrounded a long table, in the middle of which, in wooden bowls, steamed some pieces of game, already broached in a way that did honor to the appetite of the guests.

A note on this passage

The camera moves in on the men's world: a long trestle table, wooden bowls of game, thirty-six hungry bandeirantes. Alencar relishes the rough plenty of the frontier feast — the counterpoint to the family's grave, altar-like supper.
