ἀμὴν δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅπου ἐὰν κηρυχθῇ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον εἰς ὅλον τὸν κόσμον, καὶ ὃ ἐποίησεν αὕτη λαληθήσεται εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς.
Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.
<p><span class="gk">εἰς μνημόσυνον αὐτῆς</span>, in memory of her, is the only such command attached to a person in the gospels, and the tradition promptly lost her name: Mark and Matthew leave the woman unnamed, John names her as Mary of Bethany, and Luke rewrites the scene as a nameless sinner's. The command and its failure stand in the same book. The <span class="gk">μνη-</span> of <span class="gk">μνημόσυνον</span> is the <span class="gk">μνη-</span> of <span class="gk">μνημεῖον</span>, the tomb that fills the last chapter: the word of her remembrance and the word of the place of remembering are one root.</p>
