Nurse
But now all is hateful, and what is dearest is sick. For Jason, betraying his own children and my mistress, lies down in a royal marriage, having married Creon's daughter, who rules the land. And Medea, the poor wretch, dishonored, cries out the oaths, and calls back the right hands, the greatest pledge, and calls to witness the gods what kind of return she is getting from Jason.

Nurse: But now all is hateful, and what is dearest is sick.
Interpretation
But now all is hatred, and what was dearest is sick. Jason has betrayed his own children and my mistress and lies down in a royal marriage, having married the daughter of Creon, who rules this land. And Medea, poor wretch, dishonored, cries out the oaths and calls back the right hands they clasped, the greatest pledge there is, and calls on the gods to witness what return she is getting from Jason.
Now everything has turned to hatred, and νοσεῖ τὰ φίλτατα, "what is dearest is sick." The nurse's verb is the ordinary Greek word for being ill. Jason has betrayed his children and Medea to marry the daughter of Creon, king of Corinth. Medea, ἠτιμασμένη, "dishonored," cries out the oaths and calls back the right hands, the clasped hands that sealed a promise, πίστιν μεγίστην, "the greatest pledge." The language is that of a broken oath: Jason swore by the gods, and Medea calls those same gods to witness.

Nurse: And she lies without food, giving over her body to pains, wasting away all the time in tears, since she learned she had been wronged by her husband, neither lifting her eye nor raising her face from the ground; and like a rock or a sea wave she listens when she is advised by her friends.
