ἀλλʼ ἐς μὲν Μενέλαον ἐγὼ κέλομαι καὶ ἄνωγα ἐλθεῖν· κεῖνος γὰρ νέον ἄλλοθεν εἰλήλουθεν, ἐκ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὅθεν οὐκ ἔλποιτό γε θυμῷ ἐλθέμεν, ὅν τινα πρῶτον ἀποσφήλωσιν ἄελλαι ἐς πέλαγος μέγα τοῖον, ὅθεν τέ περ οὐδʼ οἰωνοὶ αὐτόετες οἰχνεῦσιν, ἐπεὶ μέγα τε δεινόν τε.
But to Menelaus I urge and command you to go; for he has lately come from elsewhere, from among peoples from whom one would not hope in his heart to return, whomever the storm-winds once drive off course into an open sea so great and vast, from where not even the birds make the crossing within a year, since it is vast and terrible.

The setting
Nestor's practical counsel: for news of Odysseus, go to Menelaus in Sparta. He has only just returned from a voyage so far-flung that no one expected him back — driven by storms across an ocean so wide that birds cannot cross it in a year.
A note on this passage
Nestor gives the errand a destination. Menelaus is the man to ask, because he has just come back from the edge of the world — and the lines pile up distance to make the point, a sea so wide that even birds need more than a year to cross it. Menelaus's return is itself a small marvel, proof that some men do come home from the impossible.
The undercurrent is hope managed carefully. Every phrase about Menelaus's far voyage doubles as a phrase about Odysseus, still missing somewhere on that same enormous sea. Nestor never says it, but the shape of the encouragement is exact: if a man could return from there, perhaps another still might. The bird that cannot make the crossing measures both the danger and the faint, stubborn possibility.
