Nor had he told them how the great Light spread itself out, in what way, or into what region it has been brought; nor had he told them of the five Impressions, nor, concerning the First Commandment, into what region they have been brought. But he discoursed with them simply, only teaching them that they exist. But their outward expansion and the order of their regions he had not told them, as they truly are. For this cause, indeed, they did not know that other regions also exist within that mystery.
The inventory of the untold closes with the narrator’s summary of eleven years of pedagogy: Jesus named the great powers, taught that they exist, and said nothing of their expansion or order. So the disciples never suspected the mystery had rooms.
The long inventory finally states its thesis, and it is a sentence about teaching. For eleven years Jesus spoke of the highest things <em>haplōs</em> — the Greek adverb for "simply, in a single fold" — "only teaching them that they exist". Names without maps; a curriculum of bare existence-claims. The word <em>haplōs</em> is worth its weight: Greek moralists used it for the honest simplicity of a person without folds, but here the single fold is precisely what conceals — a flat statement covering a pleated cosmos. The disciples were not lied to for a decade; they were taught truly and thinly, and thin truth, the narrator has been showing since 1.2, generates its own confident errors.
The chapter’s last line hands the whole opening its moral: "they did not know that other regions exist within that mystery." The book’s recurring architecture word <em>topos</em> does the work one final time — what the disciples lacked was not doctrine but geography, the suspicion that a boundary might have an interior. It is a precise description of how esoteric literature justifies itself: the old teaching was true; it was the floor plan that was missing. Chapter 2 will answer this sentence with an event rather than an argument — light will come down and open the map by force.
