ΜΑΚΑΡΙΟΣ ἀνὴρ ὃς οὐκ ἐπορεύθη ἐν βουλῇ ἀσεβῶν, καὶ ἐν ὁδῷ ἁμαρτωλῶν οὐκ ἔστη, καὶ ἐπὶ καθέδραν λοιμῶν οὐκ ἐκάθισεν·
The gateway of the whole Psalter. It opens with the same word as the Beatitudes — Μακάριος, "blessed" — and draws the line the psalm will hold to the end: the two ways, the righteous and the ungodly. Note the descent: walk, then stand, then sit — the settling-in of sin.
