Let there be light

καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεός Γενηθήτω φῶς· καὶ ἐγένετο φῶς.
God's first spoken word, and the pattern every later day repeats: a command (“Let there be”, γενηθήτω, from γίνομαι), then its instant fulfilment in the same verb (ἐγένετο). φῶς, “light”, is created before the sun and moon (which do not appear until day four, 1:14-19) — a detail commentators ancient and modern have long puzzled over.
