καὶ ἴδεν ὁ θεὸς τὸ φῶς ὅτι καλόν· καὶ διεχώρισεν ὁ θεὸς ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ φωτὸς καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σκότους.
The first occurrence of the book's refrain, καὶ εἶδεν ὁ θεὸς ὅτι καλόν, “and God saw that [it was] good” — Swete's Codex-A reading gives the unaugmented ἴδεν rather than the more familiar εἶδεν (Brenton's reading; same verb, ὁράω). καλόν does not mean merely “nice” but “fit, sound, working as it should” — each day's verdict on its own work. God then makes the first division: light from darkness.
