ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ ξύλου τοῦ γινώσκειν καλὸν καὶ πονηρόν, οὐ φάγεσθε ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ· ᾗ δ᾽ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ φάγησθε ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ, θανάτῳ ἀποθανεῖσθε.
The prohibition and its penalty, both stated with the same emphatic cognate-dative Hebraism as v.16's permission: θανάτῳ ἀποθανεῖσθε, "with death you shall die" (Hebrew מוֹת תָּמוּת) — "you shall surely die."
