The setting

A formal colophon opens a new unit: βίβλος γενέσεως, "the book of the generation/origin", the same phrase (γένεσις) that opens Matthew's gospel (Βίβλος γενέσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, Matt 1:1) and gives the whole book its Greek title, Γένεσις. From here the divine name doubles to Κύριος ὁ θεός, "the LORD God" — Κύριος renders the Hebrew tetragrammaton יהוה, ὁ θεός renders אֱלֹהִים — joining the two names for God used separately in chapter 1 and this chapter.
