καὶ πᾶν χλωρὸν ἀγροῦ πρὸ τοῦ γενέσθαι ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ πάντα χόρτον ἀγροῦ πρὸ τοῦ ἀνατεῖλαι. οὐ γὰρ ἔβρεξεν ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ ἄνθρωπος οὐκ ἦν ἐργάζεσθαι τὴν γῆν·
A second creation-account begins, told in a different key from chapter 1: instead of days and commands, a bare landscape awaiting three missing things — rain, and a man to work the ground — before plants can grow. ἐργάζεσθαι τὴν γῆν, "to work the earth," is humankind's first job description, well before any garden is planted.
