Καὶ ἐφύτευσεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς παράδεισον ἐν Ἔδεμ κατὰ ἀνατολάς, καὶ ἔθετο ἐκεῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ὃν ἔπλασεν.
παράδεισος — "paradise" — is itself a loanword: Greek borrowed it from Old Persian *paridaida ("walled around"), the word for a royal walled park or hunting-preserve (used by Xenophon of Persian kings' game-parks); the LXX translators reached for this specific, exotic word to render Hebrew גַּן (gan, "garden, enclosure") in Eden, and from here παράδεισος becomes the standard Greek/NT word for the blessed garden of God (Luke 23:43, 2 Cor 12:4, Rev 2:7). Ἔδεμ (Hebrew עֵדֶן) itself may echo a root meaning "pleasure, delight" — a garden of delight in the east.
