ποίησον οὖν σεαυτῷ κιβωτὸν ἐκ ξύλων τετραγώνων· νοσσιὰς ποιήσεις τὴν κιβωτόν, καὶ ἀσφαλτώσεις αὐτὴν ἔσωθεν καὶ ἔξωθεν τῇ ἀσφάλτῳ.
Construction begins. κιβωτός is the same word the NT will use for the ark of the covenant (Heb 9:4) and, of Noah’s ark specifically, at Heb 11:7 and Matt 24:38. The Hebrew names the wood גֹ֫פֶר (gopher), a term of unknown identity found nowhere else in the Bible; Swete’s Greek sidesteps the puzzle and gives only “squared timbers”. ἄσφαλτος, “bitumen, pitch” (source of English “asphalt”), is the same waterproofing material used for Babel’s mortar (11:3) and for caulking Moses’s basket (Exod 2:3, also ἄσφαλτος in the LXX there).
