καὶ ἐξήλειψεν πᾶν τὸ ἀνάστεμα ὃ ἦν ἐπὶ προσώπου πάσης τῆς γῆς, ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνους καὶ ἑρπετῶν καὶ τῶν πετεινῶν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· καὶ ἐξηλείφθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς. καὶ κατελείφθη μόνος Νῶε καὶ οἱ μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ κιβωτῷ.
ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνους, “from man to beast,” is a merism — naming the two poles of a category to mean the whole of it, the same figure behind “from Dan to Beersheba” or “alpha and omega.” The verse ends on the chapter's one word of hope: μόνος Νῶε, “only Noah,” survives, with those who were with him.
