καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τὸν κόρακα τοῦ ἰδεῖν εἰ κεκόπακεν τὸ ὕδωρ· καὶ ἐξελθὼν οὐχ ὑπέστρεψεν ἕως τοῦ ξηρανθῆναι τὸ ὕδωρ ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς.
The raven — proverbially a scavenger, content to feed on carrion (cf. Job 38:41, and Jesus' “Consider the ravens,” Luke 12:24) — simply leaves and does not come back; it needs no dry perch to survive. Its errand fails by indifference, setting up the dove's very different mission in the verses that follow.
