The dove, sent first

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τὴν περιστερὰν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἰδεῖν εἰ κεκόπακεν τὸ ὕδωρ ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς.
περιστερά, “dove,” is the same bird that descends on Jesus at his baptism (Matt 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, John 1:32) — the image of gentleness and peace this scene helps to found. Unlike the raven, the dove needs solid, dry ground to land.
