Ἀντίγραφον διαθήκης Ῥουβήμ, ὅσα ἐνετείλατο τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ, πρὶν ἢ ἀποθανεῖν αὐτόν, ἐν ἑκατοστῷ εἰκοστῷ πέμπτῳ ἔτει τῆς ζωῆς αὐτοῦ.

The setting

The book opens like a legal document: "a copy of the testament of Reuben" — the will and last charge that Jacob's firstborn gave his sons before he died, at the age of a hundred and twenty-five. Each of the twelve patriarchs will speak in turn; Reuben goes first.
