Against Capitú's crisp 'Então?' Bento can offer only 'Você sabe...' — two words that say nothing and trail off into the same helpless ellipsis as before. The great plan to announce the seminary and watch her face has come to this: a stalled, empty opening he cannot finish. The scheming boy has vanished; only the stammering one remains.

Machado's dialogue captures the exact texture of adolescent paralysis, the mouth moving while the will fails. But the broken line does more than embarrass Bento. It shifts the scene's whole current: since he cannot speak, his eyes wander — and in the next breath they will fall on the marked wall, on the traces Capitú tried to hide. His failure of speech is what turns him back toward the wall and toward the small mystery that will pull the chapter to its close.
