A note on this passage

The speculations escalate into farce — 'moedeiros falsos', coiners of false money — each gentleman topping the last with a wilder crime. The comedy is real: idle men inventing lurid histories for a woman they have glimpsed once. But under the laughter runs the chapter's serious point about how rumour manufactures guilt from nothing. A pretty stranger who keeps to herself becomes, in five minutes of drawing-room fancy, a seductress, a fugitive, a forger. Isaura's actual secret is graver and more innocent than any of their guesses, and the wildness of their inventions measures how far the truth of slavery lies outside what these comfortable men can imagine. They reach for counterfeiting; they cannot reach for the real crime, which is that a human being is owned.
