'It is in vain that you feign surprise; you well know the cause of my grief.'
She refuses him the exit. 'É debalde' — it is useless to play innocent, you know exactly why I grieve. The archaic 'E’' (é) and 'sorprehendido' are the 1875 orthography preserved throughout the book.
