'Senhor commander, I will do the impossible to bring you that sum within the appointed term.'
'Vou fazer o impossivel' — I will do the impossible. The phrase is exact: what he promises is, on the face of it, undoable, and the whole chapter's pathos is that he very nearly does it. The vow is the seed of the tragedy to come.
