'You are very demanding and unjust toward me, Malvina,' said Leôncio after a moment of astonishment and hesitation.
His pause — 'pasmo e hesitação' — is the tell that her ultimatum landed; then he recovers into the oldest move of the cornered, flipping the charge: SHE is the unjust one. The narrator lets us see the calculation behind the wounded tone.
